SALMS
HAM, BACON & ASSORTED MEATS
Established 1914
About us
1/9
Johann Christian Salm and his brother Karl Hiendrik Salm originally from Cleversulzbach, Wurttemberg, Germany moved to Australia in 1856.
Johann bought land at Scrub Road Belmont (now Carindale) and started farming.
In 1914 he bought a freehold property on Stanley Street, East Brisbane and started his own business.
In 1930 he moved the business to Camp Hill on Old Cleveland Road where we are still operating out of today.
To our knowledge Salms Meats Mt Bruce is the oldest freehold shop operating on the South side of Brisbane.
In the early years of our business deliveries were done in a 1929 Pontiac Cash Cart, meat was cut in the back and served to the locals.
Later during the war due to petrol rationings, deliveries were done by horse and cart.
All pork was taken to the armed forces so at christmas we produced mutton hams(leg of mutton cured, smoked and sold raw to customers) instead of pork.
The business is curently run by Jon & Tony Salm who are the 4th generation of our family to run the business.
Jons daughters Kristen and Shenae Salm are currently the families 5th generation working at the business.
At the peak of our business we employed over 20 staff and served over 1600 customers a week.
Proudly trading for 101 years!
